The Belt of Truth

Sermon Text:

We can stand against the wiles of the Devil. We are caught up in a spiritual battle. It is warfare, not sport. We are fighting against a very real enemy, who has very real powers and a very real plan for us. We are not defenceless however. God has given us the right equipment that we need to survive, for the battle is constant.

In Roman times, the belt would cover the lower abdomain and the loins. John tells us that the spiritual battle is won in Truth. It is the first place that the enemy attacks (see Genesis 3), and truth is under attack today in Post Moderninsm. The first place that we must stand is on Truth. When Jesus was tempted, the Devil attacked the truth of God’s Word, and Jesus simply responded with “It is written …”

We need to gird ourselves with truth. This means that we have more than just a head knowledge of the Truth, but it must encompass us, we must be caught up in it, and live it out, rather than simply just be able to recite biblical verses and creeds. Our lives must be dictated by Truth.

Truth must be established first, and then we can hang the rest of our beliefs onto it. If we do not have the Truth as the foundation, we will miss the remainder of Christianity. The root of all heresy is the abandonment of Truth as the foundation.
