Take Off the Lenses

Spiritual Excess is a ditch on each side of the road. Both the ridiculous antics of the Charasmaniacal churches, and the legalistic workings of the hyper-calvinistic ultra-conservative churches are extremes in spirituality.

We must be careful not to bring our theology to the Bible. We must form our theology from the Bible. For example, is infant baptism biblical? John Calvin argued from Acts 16 that this is the case, however it is an argument from silence. THe biblical perspective it only for believer’s baptism. The historical reasoning for pedobaptism was simply to bring Catholics into the Protestant faith.

So how do we read the gift of tongues? This gift has caused division within the church, and the supporters from both sides are passionate in their defence of their view. But what does the Bible tell us of this, as a gift? Stay tuned next week to answer this!

Most importantly, we need to have unity. We can have differences of opinion and understanding on various topics of theology, as long as they are not essential doctrines. God is gracious and gives us the grace to differ on non-essentials, however we still need to confront wrong teaching.
